If you have decided to introduce a new kitten to your home, the next step is to consider what kitten would be most appropriate. There are many different kittens for sale, and it’s unlikely they will all be appropriate for your home.

Your first consideration should be whether you want a pedigree kitten or a moggy.

Moggies
If you decide upon a moggy (of no specific breed, or indeed a cross between two specific breeds), then you can buy them from many places. Kitten classifieds on the internet, ads in local newspapers, advertised in shop windows, or asking at your local vetinary surgery if they know of anyone selling a kitten. You should be able to locate a kitten in your town with ease. Most likely, if a moggy is your preferred choice, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Moggys are usually of a calm, friendly temperament, unless they are cross-bred with a breed that is knowingly temperamental. It is usually safe to presume they are tolerant, and friendly with. They should also be less likely to fall ill and also cheaper to keep.

Pedigrees
On the other end of the scale, Pedigree kittens are often harder to locate, depending on your chosen breed breed in mind. If you’re planning to home your pedigree kitten with kids, it’s worth researching the pedigree you are thinking of, and dismissing the kittens that have known issues with children! Pedigree breeds such as Siamese or Burmese kittens will often scratch and claw if provoked, making them an unsuitable choice for a home with youngsters.

Also, be aware of any breeds which are prone to sickness, and that some breeds actually have relatively short life spans, and weigh up this information before making the final decision on what kitten you want.

Having selected the breed that suits you, your family and your lifestyle, the best place to get your kitten is through a reputable cat breeder. Make sure that your pedigree cat comes with all the official documents so you can be sure your kitten is a 100% healthy pedigree kitten. Also, don’t forget to research the average price of the breed you have chosen before making any payment.

All the effort taken is worth it to find the perfect kitten both for you and your family, hopefully your kitten will be part of the family for many years.
